Renewable energy infrastructure often operates in remote environments where reliable connectivity and continuous monitoring are critical.
For Wind Farm MOVASA, FIS Costa Rica designed and deployed a LoRaWAN-based monitoring solution to ensure secure, uninterrupted supervision of wind turbine towers even in locations without stable electricity or conventional internet connectivity.

This project demonstrates how IoT and LoRaWAN technologies deliver reliable solutions for renewable energy operations.

Project Overview

Industry: Renewable Energy
Location: Costa Rica
Technology: LoRaWAN
Devices Used: Milesight WS301 Magnetic Contact Sensor
Use Case: Remote access & security monitoring

The objective of this project was to maintain continuous visibility and access control for wind turbine towers regardless of power availability or environmental conditions.

The Challenge

imgi 12 s11

Wind turbines at the MOVASA wind farm are located in isolated areas where power generation depends entirely on wind conditions. When wind levels drop and turbine blades stop rotating, electricity generation stops.

As a result:

  • GPRS and traditional internet connectivity become unavailable

  • Remote monitoring systems fail

  • Access control to turbine towers becomes unreliable

This created operational and security risks, leaving critical infrastructure vulnerable and difficult to monitor.

Our Solution

To overcome these challenges, FIS Costa Rica implemented a LoRaWAN-based access monitoring system designed for remote renewable energy infrastructure.

Each turbine tower was equipped with a Milesight WS301 magnetic contact sensor, capable of detecting whether doors are open or closed and transmitting this data using LoRaWAN.

How the Solution Works

  • Sensors monitor turbine door status in real time

  • Data is transmitted securely via LoRaWAN

  • Information is displayed on a centralized dashboard

  • Alerts can be generated for unauthorized access

Most importantly, the system remains operational even without electricity or conventional internet connectivity.

Technology Used

  • LoRaWAN Network Infrastructure

  • Milesight WS301 Magnetic Contact Sensor

  • IoT Gateway & Network Server

  • Cloud-based Monitoring Dashboard

Results & Impact

The solution delivered clear and measurable benefits:

  • ✅ 24/7 monitoring of turbine access points

  • ✅ Reliable communication in remote environments

  • ✅ Improved infrastructure security

  • ✅ No dependency on GPRS or traditional internet

  • ✅ Low maintenance with long battery life

  • ✅ Scalable for future expansion

Why LoRaWAN Was the Right Choice

LoRaWAN was selected due to its long-range communication, low power consumption, high reliability in remote locations, secure data transmission, and scalability making it ideal for renewable energy infrastructure.
